Tile installation in Las Vegas usually means tiling over a concrete slab. Hairline shrinkage cracks in slabs are common, and tile set directly over a crack tends to crack along the same line. That is why the prep under the tile matters as much as the tile itself.

Before setting tile, the slab is cleaned, checked for flatness and patched where needed. Over cracks, a crack isolation or uncoupling membrane lets the concrete move slightly without passing that movement to the tile. Large-format tile needs an especially flat floor, or the edges sit uneven (called lippage) and catch bare feet.

Movement joints matter here too. Tile needs soft joints at walls and across large rooms, filled with flexible sealant instead of grout, so it can handle expansion. Skipping them is a common reason tile tents up or cracks in big open floors.

A kitchen backsplash is one of the quickest tile upgrades. Outlets are extended so covers sit flush with the new surface, edges are finished with trim or bullnose, and the joint where tile meets the countertop is caulked, not grouted, so it can flex.

Shower walls get cement board or foam board and a waterproofing layer behind the tile, since grout alone does not keep water out. A full rebuild with a new pan, niche or glass is handled as a shower remodel.

Cracked tiles can often be replaced one at a time. The damaged tile and its grout are cut out without disturbing the tiles around it, and a spare from the original install gives the best match. If no spares exist, a close match or a deliberate accent tile are the usual options.

Hard water leaves mineral film on grout and tile, especially in showers and around sinks. Standard cement grout should be sealed, while epoxy and urethane grouts resist stains without sealing and are worth considering in wet areas. Very light and very dark grout colors show scale and dirt sooner, and a mid-tone gray or beige hides more.

Cost depends on the tile size and shape, the pattern, and the prep. Small mosaics, herringbone and diagonal layouts take more cutting than a straight lay. Removing old tile, leveling the slab and adding a membrane all add time, and so do outlets, edges and transitions. Small repairs and backsplashes can often be quoted from photos; bigger floors get a walkthrough.
